An independent panel has decided not to rename the Tasmanian electorate of Franklin ‘Tongerlongeter’, following a backlash against the proposal. The Australian Electoral Commission’s (AEC) called for submissions on Franklin’s new name in February, receiving a small number of proposalsAEC proposed Tongerlongeter, honouring a Tasmanian resistance leader from the Oyster Bay nation. It would have been the first federal electorate named after a Tasmanian Aboriginal. The vast majority of the 272 submissions received during the consultation period concerned Tongerlongeter’s name.
