How a UK ministry scaled its AI transcription tool
['Dan Holmes']
The Mandarin
When UK probation officers were given access to an AI transcription tool in October, they weren’t made to use it.
Officers were welcome to keep taking notes by hand, typing during meetings, and working at 110% capacity to clear the Ministry of Justice’s (MoJ) 85,000-case backlog.
As of July, Justice Transcribe has almost 12,000 users — slightly more than the number of probation officers in the UK.
It has summarised 800,000 meetings, and saved an estimated 133,000 hours of admin time, spreading far beyond its original user cohort.
