Toronto Maple Leafs right-fielder Yasiel Puig’s dramatic escape from Cuba in 2012 has been linked to a criminal investigation involving a network accused of human trafficking and smuggling. An investigative report was published on Tuesday by The New York Times, revealing the former Los Angeles Dodgers player Yasiel Puig’s connection to the criminal network. In June 2012, Puig escaped the country along with his girlfriend, boxer Yunior Despaigne, and a Santeria priest after multiple failed attempts. The operation that helped the baseball player leave Cuba was financed from Miami, with businessman Raul Pacheco reportedly agreeing to pay $250,000 to smugglers in exchange for 20 percent of Yasiel Puig’s future earnings. The investigation also linked the network to Raúl Castro’s grandson, Rodriguez Castro, also known as “El Cangrejo”.
