The history of modern medicine is littered with so-called miracle cures that turned out to be the stuff of nightmares. The Victorians cheerfully embraced cocaine and opiates as general wonder drugs, ignoring the obvious addictive and deadly side-effects. But that number is set to increase dramatically as newer, cheaper versions in pill form come on the market. Like everyone who has benefited from these drugs, I can only hope and pray that my faith in the medical profession is not misplaced. Nevertheless, the worry remains – that if something seems too good to be true, it generally is.
