Steeve Racine, a 62-year-old inmate at the Regional Psychiatric Centre in Saskatoon, has died in custody.
A news release from Correctional Service Canada (CSC) states Racine died Aug. 7, 2026 and had been serving a life sentence since Aug. 30, 1991.
According to information published by the Montreal Gazette, Racine was in fact serving six life sentences concurrently after pleading guilty to six counts of first-degree murder in 2002.
The news of Racine's death was made public one day after Prisoners' Justice Day, a national movement to recognize the rights of prisoners worldwide.
A memorial event was held Monday in Regina, which sought to highlight the loss of those who've died in custody in Saskatchewan.
