Imagine pointing a $1500 car towards Darwin and hoping it survives the next 3700km. That’s what more than 240 teams are preparing to do when the Shitbox Rally leaves Adelaide on Saturday, August 15, for a seven-day trek to the Top End. The cars may be cheap and the name gets a laugh, but there’s a serious reason behind the adventure: raising money for cancer research. The 2026 Spring Rally has set a fundraising target of $2.4 million, adding to the more than $67 million raised through Shitbox Rally since it began in 2010. Founder James Freeman came up with the idea after losing both his parents to cancer within 12 months of each other.
