E-scooters are emerging as a significant source of serious injury among children in England, according to a six-year study of emergency admissions at three major trauma centres. The average age of the injured children was just 12, with half between 10 and 13 years old. These figures indicate that e-scooter injuries are not limited to minor cuts and bruises. Three quarters of the injured children lived in areas classified among the most socially and economically deprived in England. The study does not establish that deprivation directly causes e-scooter injuries, but the pattern may reflect differences in transport access, road environments, recreational space, supervision and exposure to privately owned scooters.
