Somali referee Omar Artan, who was barred from officiating at the World Cup after being denied entry to the United States, will referee the UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa on Wednesday. The 34-year-old was part of FIFA’s selected referee panel but was turned away at Miami International Airport. A US State Department official said Artan was deemed ineligible because of alleged associations with suspected terrorist organizations, claims the referee denied. The incident sparked outrage in Somalia and prompted a rare acknowledgment from FIFA President Gianni Infantino that “we don’t control everything.” UEFA’s decision to appoint Artan, the first Somali to officiate at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, comes amid UEFA’s cooperation agreement with CAF and has also taken on political significance amid UEFA’s escalating standoff with FIFA over World Cup governance reforms.
