Commonwealth nations urge backing for debt justice

Alongside affirming their joint position in support of establishing a new international framework for debt resolution, the Scottish, Malawian and Zambian governments made a joint plea for new debt legislation at the national level to ensure private lenders must engage fairly with debt restructuring initiatives. A joint report between SCIAF and Debt Justice UK, Debt Crisis in the Commonwealth: A call for UK Global Leadership, also revealed that one in three Commonwealth countries are in debt crisis - where 14% or more of government finances goes to debt repayments, rather than into health and education services.
