MPs will be barred from voting against their party line in the August 20 presidential election.
Nurul Islam Moni, chief whip of the ruling BNP, said article 70 will remain effective when lawmakers vote for the next president.
“Even if the July charter is implemented, article 70 will be valid in the presidential election.”
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, the returning officer for the election, has called a special meeting to conduct the polls, according to a gazette notification issued yesterday.
The EC is required to hold the presidential election within 90 days of a vacancy.
