In the hours before Monday’s game, members of the Minnesota Twins’ medical staff stood by as Byron Buxton tested out his injured right hip, jogging on the outfield grass and running the bases.
But when he took batting practice for the first time since landing on the injured list, it was instead manager Derek Shelton.
Buxton was placed on the injured list on July 7, but he had first missed games with the issue in May.
But the hip flared up again and just a little over a week after returning — July 29 — he went right back on the injured list.
Before landing on the injured list, Ryan had given up 16 earned runs in 15 1/3 innings pitched (9.39 ERA) and had talked about feeling mechanically off.
