Keegan shows in Small Things that a novella can achieve the emotional depth of a standard novel while remaining radically economical. Reading Small Things led me to another overwhelmingly delicate and understated work by Keegan, a 2022 novella called Foster. Adapted to the screen from a 2020 Stephen King novella, it was in wide release in 2025.
