A hearing has been scheduled for Friday in the federal trial of Luigi Mangione, sparking new questions as to whether the alleged killer of the UnitedHealthcare CEO could be looking to reach a plea deal. Those discussions did not produce a plea deal then, but Mangione defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo accused the prosecution at that time of trying to "manipulate public opinion" against her client. Any plea deal in the federal case could result in state criminal charges being thrown out because of New York's double jeopardy rules. Just like in the disgraced music mogul's trial, there will be an overflow space for Mangione's state trial, the judge said. The federal trial is currently scheduled for Jan. 2027.
