The Bud Werner Memorial Library is offering a free opportunity for community members to stream “Copa 71,” a documentary on the 1971 Women’s Soccer World Cup, a monumental event that has largely been excluded from sports history, states a Tuesday news release. The tournament, which included football teams from England, Argentina, Mexico, France, Denmark and Italy, took place in Mexico City in August 1971. While the scale of the event was massive — crowds of over 100,000 people, widespread TV coverage, merchandise in abundance — its players being women led to the Women’s World Cup being dismissed by both FIFA and domestic football associations around the world. The 89-minute film can be streamed through online platform Kanopy with a library card. To watch the documentary, visit SteamboatLibrary.org/Events/Copa-71 .
