The Regional Court in Hradec Králové has rehabilitated Václav Trtík, a parishioner in Číhošť and an eyewitness to the so-called Číhošť miracle in December 1949. Trtík was imprisoned in 1950 in connection with the persecution of priest Josef Toufar, who was tortured and killed by the communist State Security service (StB). The court ruled on Tuesday that Trtík had been unlawfully detained. Priest Josef Toufar is one of the best-known victims of the communist campaign against the Catholic Church after the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia in February 1948. He came under investigation by the StB after a cross on the main altar of his church in Číhošť, in the Havlíčkův Brod region, allegedly moved during mass in December 1949.
