A fire and possible explosion killed a person and leveled a home in northwest Indiana during storms that left "catastrophic" damage across the area on Tuesday, authorities said. Portage Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a fire on the north side of the city during the intense storms, authorities said. Reports of an explosion were also made, however authorities said they could not immediately confirm that information and are continuing to investigate. Portage, Indiana, chief of police Michael Candiano said, "he has never seen so much destruction in one storm as we've gotten so far in this one," according to Mayor Austin Bonta. Bonta also signed an emergency proclamation for Portage after the storms and Portage Township Schools announced that the first day of classes that were originally scheduled for Wednesday were canceled.
