Second cat with rabies identified in Montérégie
['Matthew Mccully']
Sherbrooke Record
Record Staff (HB)Following the first confirmed case of rabies discovered in a stray cat in Godmanchester, Montérégie on July 23, 2026, a second cat with rabies was confirmed Aug. 10, this time roughly 20km away in Saint-Anicet, near Longueuil.
Three people had to receive preventive treatment for rabies after having risky contact with the animal.
This situation underscores the importance of keeping your pets’ vaccinations up to date and avoiding contact with unfamiliar animals.
It is also important to remind children not to approach unfamiliar animals and to notify an adult if contact occurs.
Preventive treatment for rabies, administered promptly after contact with an infected animal, prevents the disease from developing in humans.
