The landmark was removed in 2016 and was deemed to be beyond economic repair, before £35,000 of funding was acquired to put towards the works. Nevertheless, full replacement of the clock mechanism and associated planting have been priced at around £80,000, leaving the committee to decide how it wants to take things forward. One of six opinions set to be presented at next week’s meeting proposes simply removing existing planting and not installing the clock at all. Option three would see traditional “carpet bedding” and the installation of the clock, with annual design changes of the flower beds. Option five is a combination of hard landscaping and traditional planting with a full cost estimate yet to be confirmed.
