MÉRIDA, Yucatán — Gerardo López Fernández, director of the System for Integral Family Development (DIF) in Mérida, has been awarded the prestigious Tonanzin International Award 2026. The Tonanzin International Award honors presidents, directors, and leaders of family development systems across Mexico and Ibero-America whose social programs demonstrate a significant positive impact on their communities. Limón emphasized that recipients serve as inspirations for public leadership across the region. The award takes its name from the Nahuatl word “Tonanzin,” meaning “our mother,” symbolizing nurturing care and service toward the community. By advancing family welfare initiatives, DIF Mérida continues to position the city as a regional model for social integration and public service.
