Read our Privacy noticeSafeway is closing more stores as its parent company, Albertsons, works to reduce and reorganize its grocery store locations, Inc. reports. The chain has already shuttered at least three stores in 2026, in California, D.C. and Oregon. Last year, Albertsons closed at least 30 stores across its various banners, including locations under the Carrs, Albertsons, and United Supermarkets. In Hayward, all 76 employees were transferred to other Safeway locations under the company’s union agreement. Safeway has followed a similar approach at many of its other store closures, moving employees to nearby locations when possible.
