One in ten working-age adults in Greater Manchester are claiming personal independence payments, new data reveals. Around 235,000 people are claiming PIP, the main disability benefit, in the region, which works out at 10.1% of the total population of working age adults. More than two in five claimants in the constituency receive PIP for a psychiatric disorder (42.2 per cent, according to analysis by our data unit. Blackley and Middleton South has the second-highest proportion of working-age claimants in Greater Manchester (13.4 per cent), followed closely by Bolton South and Walkden (12.3 per cent). A major factor behind the rise is the soaring number of people claiming PIP for disabling psychiatric disorders - such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
