Why Yabloko, Russia’s Anti-War Party, Was Excluded From Parliamentary Vote As Kremlin Tightens Its Grip on Opposition

In a decisive legal manoeuvre that underscores the shrinking space for political dissent, Russia’s Supreme Court on Monday annulled the registration of the liberal Yabloko party, effectively barring the nation’s only anti-war political organisation from participating in next month’s parliamentary elections.
However, the Supreme Court’s intervention reversed that decision, stripping the historic liberal party of its federal ballot slate.
Furthermore, representatives from Russia’s financial watchdog, Rosfinmonitoring, alleged that several party candidates had received foreign financial transfers in 2025, prompting brief court closures to enforce non-disclosure agreements.
Yabloko chairman Nikolai Rybakov vehemently rejected these accusations during the hearing, dismissing the claims as absurd pretexts designed to eliminate legitimate political competition.
Party co-founder Grigory Yavlinsky deplored the ruling in an online statement, asserting that the exclusion demonstrates the authorities’ profound anxiety over the widespread public desire for peace.
