When walking into the ground reporters asked ‘was he still a Derry City player’, with McClean responding by saying ‘clearly’. Another issue McClean has had this campaign was playing in a new midfield role, which never suited him. After Lynch’s departure last Wednesday, McClean stated to journalists in a ‘tongue-in-cheek’ remark ‘I’ve been offered a deal to retire’.
