French Publishers Challenge Google AI Summaries Cutting Traffic By 38%
['Er Velasco']
the deep dive
The Alliance says publishers were offered changes to existing licensing arrangements, while opting out of AI use could reduce their visibility.
The case matters because Google is already operating under competition commitments governing its negotiations with French publishers.
In March 2024, the competition authority imposed another €250 million fine, including over Google’s use of publisher content for its Bard AI system without adequate disclosure.
The Alliance is now asking regulators to apply similar enforcement logic to AI search.
France’s competition authority has not yet announced any remedy against Google.
