A Strange Arc Emerges From Webb’s ArchiveThe object, designated A1, was identified by astrophysicist Homer Dávila Gutierrez while examining archival observations from Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). The data were collected through General Observer program GO-5293, which targeted the galaxy cluster MACS J0308.9+2645. Gutierrez searched 54 public JWST/NIRCam fields and evaluated 1,591 possible candidates before A1 emerged as an especially persuasive gravitational-arc candidate. The revision changes the astrophysical interpretation substantially: A1 is not currently supported as a galaxy from the universe’s first billion years. So I treat its nature and redshift as open questions pending the same corrected reanalysis I applied to A1,” Gutierrez said.
