An attack on commercial vessel in the Red Sea has once again thrust one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors into the spotlight, with reports of crew members killed after the vessel came under attack near Yemen’s Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Following the attack, the crew reportedly lost control of the vessel, while Yemeni coastguard personnel moved toward the ship amid the unfolding emergency.
The incident shows another serious warning for commercial shipping navigating the Red Sea and the strategically vital Bab el-Mandeb, a narrow maritime chokepoint linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
Houthi forces have repeatedly targeted commercial vessels in the Red Sea since late 2023, using missiles, drones and small boats.
Riyadh has reportedly been considering measures to protect shipping through the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, while concerns have grown over the possibility of a wider confrontation.
