More than half a million without power in Chicago area, NW Indiana amid severe weather

Strong storms across the Chicago area and northwest Indiana left more than half a million ComEd and NIPSCO customers without power on Tuesday.
As of just after 12:45 p.m., more than 280,000 ComEd customers and more than 280,500 NIPSCO customers were without power, according to outage data provided by the utility companies.
The entire town of Schererville, Indiana, was without power as of just after 1 p.m. CT, according to local police.
Gusts up to 100 mph were observed in parts of the Chicago area, according to the National Weather Service, and several large trees were left toppled.
