The team included two young defenders, Guisippoi Bergomi (inter Milan) and Franco Baresi (AC Milan), as back-ups. The Bergomi- Baresi combo at the center of the Italy defense was almost impregnable. After missing the 1994 WC, Bergomi made a surprise comeback in the 1998 WC; Italy after winning their group, met Norway in the round of 16. But, Italian defense with Bergomi, Carnavaro and Maldini, stood firm, and Italy won 1-0. In defense, Bergomi, Guiseppe Baresi (Franco’s elder brother) and Riccardo Ferri were outstanding.
