NEW YORK — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is looking to introduce technology that will use excess heat from subway stations to warm nearby municipal buildings. The announcement on Monday, Aug. 10, involved Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and MTA officials, and came just three days after announcement of a major renovation of the 113-year-old Chambers Street station. The thermal energy project will seek to find ways to reduce that heat and mitigate heat-related issues that can cause service delays. Exploring a Thermal Energy Network model is a major step forward that has the potential to turn excess heat into a valuable asset for riders and the city.” The program announced Monday will see radiant cooling technology absorb heat from the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall station platforms, and potentially from Chambers Street as well.
