+ ↺ − 16 pxFour US human rights organizations filed a lawsuit against the administration of President Donald Trump on Tuesday, challenging sanctions imposed on the International Criminal Court and accusing Washington of undermining international efforts to prosecute serious crimes.
They argued that the sanctions could significantly hinder efforts to hold perpetrators of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity accountable.
The Palestine investigation is one of 18 probes the ICC is conducting into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Tensions intensified after the ICC issued arrest warrants in November 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged crimes committed in Gaza.
The Trump administration subsequently imposed sanctions on ICC prosecutors and judges, as well as three prominent Palestinian human rights organizations and Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories.
