ST. PAUL — A day before the Aug. 11 primary, Minnesota has already seen record turnout in early voting for a primary in a non-presidential election year.
The 2020 state primary drew 543,665 early voters, but that was during a presidential year as well as the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Simon said that should total turnout — not just early voting turnout — surpass the modern-day state primary record of 23% in 2018, it would be “extraordinary.”
The 2024 state primary saw 13% turnout, 2022 saw 19%, and 2020 saw 22%.
Ekblad also said he’s not aware of any overlap between the recent water-related cybersecurity threat activity and state election systems.
