Fourteen illegal chrome miners were found dead after a mine caved in near Marikana in South Africa’s North West province, while authorities believe others may remain trapped, The Daily Maverick reported. Illegal chrome mining and illicit washing plants are common in the region, where informal miners enter abandoned gold and platinum operations to extract remaining deposits no longer in use to start their own operations and search for deposits. “Those who finance these operations, provide equipment, facilitate access, transport illegal miners and ultimately profit from illegally extracted minerals must understand that they are also targets of law enforcement.”
