Portage la Prairie RCMP are reporting that a local officer was recently attacked at the local hospital while guarding a prisoner in the emergency room area. On August 3, 2026, at 1:45am, an RCMP officer, who was on-shift and guarding a prisoner at the Portage District General Hospital, was attacked by an unknown adult male suspect. Police say that the officer requested backup and fought to control the male with the assistance of hospital staff in the reception area. Additional officers from the Portage la Prairie RCMP detachment immediately responded to help place the male under arrest. Members noted that one officer sustained minor injuries as a result of this incident, and was treated at the hospital.
