Political statements were frequently made about the National Flag, including claims that people in Kashmir would not come forward to hoist it. Instead of engaging in political arguments, we decided to respond by reaching out directly to people in villages and remote areas. The Gurjar-Bakarwal community, meanwhile, had a grassroots presence in some of the most remote and border regions of Kashmir. Major General Vishwasrao extended support to the effort to take the National Flag to residents of border villages and encourage them to hoist it at their homes. The experience of Kashmir’s border villages is one such chapter.
