Share onIt was a big street festival weekend in Toronto with the return of Taste of the Danforth attracting some 1.5 million visitors over the three day event.
The gun violence at Salsa on St. Clair last month cast a long shadow over Toronto’s summer festival season, unnerving a city that has long taken pride in its vibrant street celebrations.
But with several events wrapping up safely this weekend — enhanced security measures and a strong police presence are helping to restore trust and keep the city’s summer traditions alive.
At Taste of the Danforth, between Broadview and Jones Avenues, Toronto Police officers were on full display across the Danforth with the Toronto Star quoting one unnamed officer as saying, “if people come with bad intentions, a high-vis presence will be a deterrent.”
Just before Taste of the Danforth got underway on Friday, Police Chief Myron Demkiw announced a pair of 18 year olds had been charged with first degree murder in the deadly shooting at Salsa on St. Clair.
