The North East Regional Police Command has arrested four persons and intercepted 118 bags of cocoa beans allegedly being smuggled to neighbouring Togo through the Bunkpurugu-Togo border.
The cocoa beans, weighing 11,800 kilogrammes, were intercepted at Bunkpurugu on Sunday, August 9, 2026, following information received by the Police about a truck transporting a suspicious consignment towards the Togo border.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the truck, a Hyundai Rhino with registration number AS-3272-25, was loaded with plantain and cocoa when it was stopped at the Bunkpurugu Police Snap Check Point.
The Police said the plantain was allegedly being used as a decoy to conceal the cocoa beans.
The interception comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to prevent the unauthorised movement of cocoa across Ghana’s borders.
