Meatpacking giant JBS has announced plans to turn its beef processing plant in Souderton, Pennsylvania, into a value-added processing facility, preserving about 400 jobs at a plant the company previously planned to close. According to a press release, JBS plans to spend more than $30 million over 10 years to improve the plant’s “value-added and case-ready capabilities.” Earlier this summer, JBS announced it would be closing the Pennsylvania plant and an existing value-added facility in Memphis as part of “a broader strategy focused on growth, modernization and long-term competitiveness in the United States.” United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1776 President Wendell Young said the union looks forward to continuing to work with JBS as the facility undergoes the transition. "This announcement provides stability for hundreds of workers and their families while creating a path for long-term success at the Souderton facility,” he said.
