When defence attorney Stan Reiz KC spoke on his behalf on Monday, he said there was very little evidence to “explain what happened and why”, and no criminal trial should be decided on speculation. Reiz said the prosecution’s case, which was just a theory that they have put forward, fell far short of proving Wright killed the child. There are no witnesses or forensic evidence, and the Crown cannot say when or where the little girl was killed, or offer a motive. Just a day before the murder, after he had been playing with the little girl, she had told him she loved him, he said. Hankin said that a stranger did not kill the little girl, and there was no third party that took her.
