Congress could erase D.C.’s universal motorcycle helmet requirement. In D.C. alone, which isn’t exactly a massive area, six people have died in motorcycle crashes already this year. Since 2014, at least 67 people have died in motorcycle crashes in the District, although city data doesn’t indicate whether they were wearing helmets. According to data cited by the Governors Highway Safety Association, nationwide, 6,228 motorcyclists died in crashes during 2024. In states without universal helmet laws, 51 percent of motorcyclists killed in 2023 were not wearing helmets.
