Potential is usually inferred from a snapshot. A child performs well in one setting, so we draw an imaginary line from that performance into the distant future. Potential therefore means something like this: Under an unspecified combination of effort, opportunity and good fortune, you might achieve something impressive. Telling children they have potential may be intended to encourage effort. Stop asking yourself, “What should someone with my potential have achieved by now?”
