Secretary Hegseth claims that soldiers with low testosterone are not top-flight fighters, and so wants to offer hormone treatment to anyone with “too low” testosterone. Similarly, men who engage in violent or competitive activities increase their testosterone levels immediately after. And finally, of course, women, on average, have lower testosterone levels than men at every stage of the life cycle; do we really want to experiment on women in the military by artificially increasing their testosterone? The claim is that testing every soldier over a certain age for testosterone has no real functional purpose. So next time you hear about testing soldiers’ testosterone levels, remember that it may be a ruse for pushing women out of the military.
