The Sioux Falls School District has hired 145 new teachers for the upcoming school year and has only six teaching positions left to fill, district officials told the School Board on Monday.
Human Resources Director Becky Dorman said the remaining openings include two high school positions, one middle school position and three special education positions.
The district also is trying to expand its student-teaching program by recruiting people who have previously worked in Sioux Falls schools.
ADVERTISEMENTThis year, 55 of the new teachers previously served as student teachers in the district, up from 38 three years ago.
Of those, 32 left the teaching profession, 36 moved or left because of family or child-care concerns, and 18 took jobs with nearby school districts.
