Instead, it appeared in the 2026 rulebook as a smaller summer adjustment, meaning fans could watch an assistant launch a red flag this fall and reasonably wonder when that became legal. Head Coaches Can Officially Hire A Challenge-Flag GuyRule 15, Section 1, Article 1 now says the head coach or a “pregame challenge designee” can initiate a replay challenge by throwing a red flag before the next legal snap or kick. Head coaches are simultaneously managing personnel, play calls, clock situations, officials and approximately 900 people screaming into various headsets. For more than two decades, the red flag has visually belonged to the head coach.
