Chronic viruses reawaken in COVID-19SARS-CoV-2 infection can awaken multiple chronic viruses that persist in the population, particularly herpesviruses and anelloviruses. A multiomic analysis of more than 1,000 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 has identified widespread viral reactivation linked to heightened inflammation, immune and metabolic disturbances, and long COVID, suggesting these pathogens may play a greater role in disease progression than previously appreciated.
