An abandoned mine site in Gilpin is planned to become the focus of a land reclamation project carried out by the state’s Department of Environment Protection. The project is proposed for a site south of Schenley Road just outside of Aladdin. Tom Decker, DEP regional communications manager, provided TribLive with an overview of the project through email. The designation makes the mine sites eligible for reclamation, he said, using federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act money through the Department of Interior’s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement. “Representatives from DEP will work with the property owners and trail group to ensure that all concerns are addressed,” he said.
