Irwin officials have awarded a contract to build a temporary road through a vacant lot to bypass a closed bridge along Route 30. El Grande Industries Inc. of Donora was awarded a $55,160 contract by Irwin Borough council to build the temporary road connecting Caruthers Lane with Colony Drive, giving better access to Norwin Townhomes and Core Event Center. Steve Schmitt, the borough engineer with Gibson-Thomas Engineering of Latrobe, had told borough officials that contractors told him that the temporary roadway could be built in less than a week. It will cut through properties owned by Calvary Baptist Church, Norwin Townhomes LP and Albensi Management Consultants Inc. Matt had told borough officials earlier this year that Norwin Townhomes was willing to commit $24,000 to the cost of a new bridge.
