A bipartisan bill cosponsored by U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) that would authorize the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to carry out a research, training, and investigation program related to Down syndrome received approval on Aug. 6 from the U.S. Senate. “This legislation will strengthen the critical research that helps improve the lives of individuals with Down syndrome and supports their families,” Sen. Moran said. “Research funded by the NIH has already led to meaningful advancements, but more work remains.” By authorizing continued federal investments in scientific research focused on Down syndrome, he added that S. 1838 would “help scientists better understand the health challenges these individuals face and advance new solutions to improve care and outcomes.” The Global Down Syndrome Foundation has endorsed the measure, which is named for DeOndra Dixon, a foundation ambassador and a Quincy Jones Exceptional Advocacy Awardee, who died at the age of 36 in 2020.
