It is burning within the Pecos Wilderness Area of the forest's Española Ranger District, roughly 35 miles north of Santa Fe and 10 miles north of Ski Santa Fe. Road ClosuresSanta Fe County closed New Mexico State Road 503 between County Road 98 and State Road 76 to all but emergency vehicles as fire activity increased near the roadway. The Santa Fe National Forest separately issued a temporary closure order for Forest Road 306, covering the stretch from its intersection with Forest Road 440 west to the forest boundary. Santa Fe Public Schools has told families they may opt students out of outdoor activities because of worsening air quality in the area.
