The avalanche struck the international expedition attempting a summit push on the world's 12th-highest peak. Among those who lost their lives was renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja, and Pakistan's Sohail Sakhi. Expressing profound sorrow at the event, Pakistan's Consul General in New York, Aamer Ahmed Atozai, paid tribute to their courage and spirit and conveyed condolences to their families. Other speakers at the memorial thanked and commended the Government of Pakistan for its prompt rescue operations and assistance extended to the mountaineers.
