KENYA: The county of Nairobi has approved the development of two metro lines, one underground and one elevated, for completion by 2034. Both are planned to be delivered as part of Phase I of the Nairobi Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transit System. The programme is being developed in close collaboration with the president’s office, and it was formally launched by the Nairobi county authority on July 21. The total investment for Phase I is estimated at US$7.8bn, including US$6.5bn for infrastructure and US$900m for rolling stock. Plans to deliver a mass rapid transit system serving Nairobi first appeared in the city’s master plan in as early as 1948.
